GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY – Los Angeles, CA

ESG provided structural and mechanical analysis and fabrication drawings for this high precision lift installed in the planetarium of the Griffith Observatory. The lift is a two-stage unit with a primary mechanism comprised of ball screw jacks and two secondary lifts consisting of linear positioning tables. The lift was required to achieve a vertical repeatability of +/- ½ mm, with a total load of approximately 20,000 pounds. ESG developed zero-torque joints for the connections from the lift columns (both primary and secondary) to the lift platforms, which eliminated internal stresses both within the lift system and the potential for internal stresses to affect the optical equipment. Our services included an on-site installation review and machinery adjustment. The lift supports Carl Zeiss optical equipment and is one of two such installations in the U.S. The entire system was designed to meet the full provisions of the California Building Code.

TEATRO PARAMOUNT – San Juan, Puerto Rico

Entertainment Structures Group provided the mechanical, electrical and control/safety system design for this theatre renovation. The project included a moveable floor – the floor will slope in the down position to allow for basic theatre seating and then rotate to a flat position for dancing and smaller shows. A hinge is located at one end of the floor with screw jacks at the other end to lift the 2,000 sq ft structure.
